"Sanctuary," 2018 (detail), Erick Antonio Benitez.

Focusing on contemporary issues, says artist Erick Antonio Benitez, brings an immediacy to artwork, a chance to immerse an audience, to inspire reflection, and -- when everything clicks -- to perhaps effect change in real time.

It's the final week for Esta Tierra Es Tu Tierra (This Land Is Your Land) in The Gallery at PCA&D, Benitez's multimedia exhibition on display since November. The Salvadoran-American artist's collection of photos, documentary film, and found objects document his travels over the length of the U.S.-Mexico border. Based in Baltimore, Benitez earned a BFA in Painting from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2014. We talked to Benitez about the demands of focusing art on contemporary issues, his process of compiling many pieces into multimedia, multidisciplinary artwork, and the rewards of uncovering timeless themes living within real-time events:

It can be tough, as an art student, to get your work seen beyond class critiques, professor evaluations, and your social media followers.

The work of more than half a dozen PCA&D students, though, recently was on display as part of an exhibit curated by Photography Department Chair Eric Weeks at the 2019 Pingyao International Photography Festival in Shanxi, China. It's the second time Weeks has curated student work at the weeklong event, which draws educators and artists from around the world.

This year, photos by Kay Baier '19, Justin Carney '20, Jose Collantes '19, Ashley Crist '20, Karim Gavins '20, and Kyra Shackelford, '20, along with former PCA&D student Hanna Schoener, were part of The Adventure of the Photographer: Photographs from Four Art & Design Colleges in the Mid-Atlantic Region of the United States. Along with works from PCA&D students, Weeks, curated student work from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, Philadelphia's University of the Arts, and Tyler School of Art, Temple University.

Eric Weeks is the Chair of our Photography Department. Eric first fell in love with photography at the age of sixteen. His high school photography teacher, Ken Ross, recognized his interest and helped obtain a full-tuition, four-year scholarship to attend art school in New York City. After receiving his BFA, he played bass in a rock band for a few years while exhibiting photography, and working as a commercial photographer and custom printer.
