Corinne Carmiche '20 used her summer vacation from art school to take a crash course of sorts in public art in the real world: an internship with CITYarts, a New York-based public arts and education nonprofit.

CITYarts programs pair children and youth with professional artists to create public art in New York City. And, since its 1989 founding, CITYarts has gone global using local artists and volunteers. Youth on six continents, and in 81 countries, have created more than 6,000 works through CITYarts' Pieces for Peace Project.

When Corinne learned about the program, the Fine Art major says, it seemed a perfect fit.

I'm Justin Phillips and I am a professor at PCA&D in the BFA degree program, specifically teaching in the College’s Foundation Department, and I am an instructor in the College’s Continuing Education program. I’m also a PCA&D alumnus, having graduated from the BFA program in fine art. I also received my MFA from Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

The exhibition at the Main Gallery at PCA&D this summer features a selection of outstanding artwork created by our rising junior and senior BFA students. A wide variety of media are represented including digital and hand-painted works, illustration, sculpture, painting, printmaking, photography and graphic design. The exhibit opens Monday June 11 and runs through July 27.

Opening Reception: First Friday, July 6, 5 -8 p.m.

Pictures, top to bottom, the works of Maikue Lor, Karim Gavins, Melanie Vera, Naomi Hudnall, and Rainey Supple.

PCA&D's five Fine Art seniors, Thomas White, Leah Walt, Seres Hofundur, Samantha Ferrizzi, and Seth Crider,  offered a peak into their Senior Studios as they work on their senior thesis, the culminating project of their BFA degree here at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design. Their works areas varied as they are interesting, and all will be shown to the public at PCA&D's Senior Show and Celebration Friday May 4th.

Student Ambassasor Brigitte Errickson, Fine Art major from Changewater, NJ, and the Warren County Technical School, laughs out load at almost anything. “I am very easily amused. I absolutely adore puns and wordplay.”

As she was searching for colleges, PCA&D was the only college she looked at that was specifically an art school, and she liked how focused it was. “I also was really attracted to the small size, and I really like that I can get the help I need in class.”
