Join the letterpress movement! This workshop introduces the history and fundamentals of letterpress printing. Hand type-setting, composition, proofing, locking up, and printing are all part of this hands-on experience. You will be able to choose from a vast selection of antique type, imagery, and decorative borders for your very own print and use up to six colors on the six presses. You will take away five prints (5” x 7”) of your final work. NOTE: Supplies/materials are included in the cost; this workshop is held at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology.

Relief Printing for Greeting Cards - WS 80 - Sat, Oct 24 [fa icon="chevron-down"]

Learn how to create and reproduce your own greeting cards for holidays, birthdays and other special occasions using the relief block printing method. This technique does not require a press, and can easily be achieved at home using water-based inks, making clean-up simple. Students will learn how to carve a block, apply the ink with a roller, properly place the paper, handpress the ink onto the paper, and pull an edition of personal cards.

Responsive Design - DES 165 - Mon, Oct 19 - Nov 16 [fa icon="chevron-down"]

With the proliferation of smartphones and tablets, website design work has been radically altered to display properly on any device. Responsive web design is a methodology in which sites are designed to provide easy reading and navigation across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones) with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling. In addition to covering up-front site framework development, lessons will cover setting up the HTML page and containers, CSS media queries, fluid grids, repositioning navigation links, responsive images and more. NOTE: Can be taken in combination with DES 164, Interaction Design Fundamentals for 1 credit towards Web Design certificate. Completion of DES 155, HTML & Web Design or equivalent web design experience required. Students must have a basic understanding of Adobe Photoshop.
