You are an artist. Show them what you've got.

Pre-College classes are designed to inspire and prepare high school students through exciting coursework to amplify their portfolios, earn college credit, and learn from our faculty of professional artists and designers. Students ages 16 and up can also explore our adult classes.

September 21-November 23, Saturdays, 10AM-1PM
Instructor: Matt Chapman

This course is designed to take you deeper into the artwork you love to make. You’re thinking about and building a portfolio that you feel shows who you are as a young artist. Is there a piece or two you really feel special about? Would you love to dive into that piece deeper? This class is meant for this very adventure.

We begin by selecting one or two pieces from your portfolio as jumping off point. From here you, along with the guidance of your instructor, will create a companion piece or small collection of companion pieces to support your major interest. This class will show what amazing things can happen when given the time and freedom to really explore the types of art or media you really enjoy.

  • Portfolio of completed artworks: 3-12 pieces
  • Sketchbook: In use or new (in use preferred but not essential)
  • 18 x 24 inch drawing pad: White paper (not newsprint)
  • Selection of graphite pencils 3h-6b
  • Eraser
  • Ruler
  • Preferred medium of choice. Examples include: Color Pencil, Watercolor, Marker, Ink, Acrylic, Oil paint…

September 21-November 23, Saturdays, 10AM-1PM
Instructor: Sheri Hansen

This introductory level course will ask the student to explore two questions: how to paint? and how to paint digitally in Photoshop? We will begin studying the simple effects of light on form to learn to think like an observational painter, while exploring the digital tools that Adobe Photoshop has to offer.

For any artist that is interested in digital painting we will focus on building understanding in rendering 3-dimensional form, light and its effect on local color, mark-making and using brushes in the digital space, Photoshop adjustment layers and their ability to create various lighting scenarios for your paintings, and getting comfortable in using Photoshop as an art-making tool.

  • Sketchbook or notebook and a pen
  • Login credentials for an active Adobe account (NO subscription necessary- this is NOT something that costs extra; it is simply an individual user account with adobe.com that is required to use the software as of 2019- we will talk about this on the first day)
  • Login credentials for a cloud-based storage account such as Google Drive, iCloud, or Dropbox

You’ve spent a lot of time and energy creating artwork for your portfolio, now it’s time to learn how to properly document it! Digital submission of artwork is something that artists must regularly do for things like applications, scholarship programs, juried exhibitions, personal marketing, and more. Students in this workshop will learn how to document their work through accessible resources found in your pocket, as well as professional equipment in our photography studios. This workshop takes place on the same day as our November Open House. Make it a full day at PCAD! Learn more or register for open house today.
