On November 7th, the Illustration Department was proud to host Adam Gustavson as our guest speaker and demonstrator for the day. Adam began the day speaking about his life as a Children’s book illustrator (Simon and Schuster) and his gravitation to mural and gallery work. His publications vary from fictional tales to non fiction historical illustration. Some of his books illustrate the life of the Beatles before their fame as well as the rambunctious life of Alice Roosevelt. He also described his ability to bounce back and forth between oils and gouache and his love for creating fun small sketches that he features on social media under the hashtag #fereltown.

Internationally renowned Azerbaijani artist Faig Ahmed spoke to students, faculty and community members at Pennsylvania College of Art and Design via Skype from Dubai today, about why he uses carpets as the basis of his art.

Since he was young, Ahmed had been struck by the nature of traditional carpets of his homeland Azerbaijan. According to Ahmed, studied the carpets and learned, throughout his county’s history, starting with the Zoroastrians several thousands of years ago, then Christianity, then Islam, then communism, and now secular society, and the carpets, and the patterns in them, were the same. The carpet connected all these cultures.

China Blue

This spring, the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design’s Main Gallery is presenting a series highlighting scientific and technologically-inspired artwork. 

The next exhibition in the series is Creativity of Consciousness, March 17th- April 28th, which features the revolutionary work of artist China Blue and her team. 

  • China Blue will lead a panel discussion with collabotators Dr. Seth Horowitz, author of "Universal Sense: How Hearing Shapes the Mind," and coder Christopher Konopka on March 17 at noon. The presentation will be open to the public.
  • First Friday Reception at PCA&D, Friday April 7, 5 – 8 p.m.

Pennsylvania College of Art & Design has announced that Marnie Benney has joined the college in the position of Gallery Director, according to an announcement by Marc Torick, PCA&D’s Academic Dean.

Benney will oversee PCA&D’s Main Gallery, curating exhibitions by nationally renowned artists whose work will enhance the PCA&D student experience and serve as a community cultural resource. In addition, Benney will assist the college on special projects, focusing on relationships within the community to increase PCAD’s participation and visibility.
